According to reports, Call of Duty is the top-selling game of 2024 in the US.
Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 became the top-selling game in the US last year in terms of dollar sales, according to new data from Circana for December 2024 , the year Black Ops 6 took the top spot in dollar revenue.
According to Circana, Call of Duty’s achievement of holding the record for the top-selling video game franchise in the US in terms of dollar sales (physical or digital) for the 16th consecutive year is a significant milestone in the gaming industry.
Last month, after releasing data for November 2024 .
Circana announced that EA Sports College Football 25 had become the top-selling sports game in US history. However, even that success could not knock Call of Duty out of first place for the year, with EA’s game settling for second place.
According to Circana’s data, Americans’ spending on video games fell by 1.1% in 2024 compared to 2023. The decline was primarily due to a 25% drop in spending on gaming hardware, as sales of content (including software, DLC, and subscriptions) and accessories rose 2% and 6%, respectively. This decline in hardware sales can be attributed to the maturity of the gaming console market, with the Switch having been around for a long time and both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S reaching their peak.
“It has been a tough year for gaming hardware, without a doubt,” Circana CEO Matt Piscatella wrote on BlueSky. “But that was to be expected, as the Switch has been around for a long time, and both the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S are at their peak.”
“Total hardware spending in 2024 is expected to reach $4.9 billion, still significantly higher than the $3.9 billion spent in 2019,” Piscatella continued. “Well, that is understandable.”
