Prominent AI researcher launches controversial startup; goal: to completely replace humans.

Mechanize
The new startup Mechanize’s goals have drawn much criticism from the public.

According to a post by prominent AI researcher Tamay Besiroglu on the social network X,

his new startup, Mechanize, aims to automate all tasks and achieve the ultimate goal of completely replacing humans.

The startup is a sub-branch of Epoch’s prestigious research institute; therefore, its goal has been highly criticized. Mechanize wants to create conditions for replacing humans active in every job with artificial intelligence.

Besiroglu says that workers in the United States receive a total of $18 trillion a year,

and this number reaches $60 trillion globally. So AI could save a lot of money, he said, adding that they are currently focused on white-collar jobs.

“I have a lot of respect for the work of the Epoch founders, but it’s sad to see this,” one user said on social media. “Automating more human work is actually a big bonus for companies and a big loss for most people.”

Note that the Epoch Institute is known for its neutral stance on AI companies,

and such news can substantially impact public opinion.

Mechanize says it has the backing of prominent figures such as Nat Friedman, Daniel Gross, Patrick Callison, Dwarkesh Patel, Jeff Dean, Shalt Douglas, and Marcus Abramovich.

Bishiroglu reassures the sceptics that transitioning from human labour to AI will pave the way for explosive economic growth,

leading to a richer society.

He firmly believes that full automation will enhance living standards and bring forth new services for the masses, instilling a sense of hope and optimism.

This optimistic view ignores a fundamental reality: If humans don’t have jobs, they won’t have the income to buy everything that agents produce. Bishiroglu counters that employees will become more valuable and earn more in their complementary roles, a paradox in itself.

“Even in scenarios where wages may decline, economic well-being is not determined by wages alone; people usually receive their income from other sources, such as rents, dividends, and the government.”

With a little more attention, we realize that Besiroglu’s views are extreme and controversial. He is seriously looking for the complete replacement of human labour with artificial intelligence. Ultimately, from the plans of large companies to small startups,

they make us think every day about whether artificial intelligence will eventually replace us.
